Imagine receiving a text message from a strange number saying: “Your account has been suspended.” Or perhaps an email that appears to be from your bank or credit card company that warns you that your access has been blocked. Your immediate instinct might be to panic – nobody wants to be denied access to their money! However, that reaction is exactly what the scammers want, and their strategy is simple: Provoke fear and urgency so you act without thinking and share your personal information.
During October, Cybersecurity Month, we want to remind you that the best defense against these fraud attempts is to be informed. Recognizing the signs early can make the difference between falling into the trap or keeping your data and money safe.
Your bank will never ask you for passwords or codes. While you may receive security alerts about suspicious transactions, your bank will never call you or write asking you to reveal sensitive information such as your PIN, account number or Social Security Number. If someone does, it’s a scam.
Don’t click on suspicious links. A link could lead to pages that mimic official sites, but they’re designed to steal your credentials. If you’re not sure, the safest thing to do is to not click on it and contact your bank directly.
Always communicate through official channels. Scammers often use unknown cell phone numbers or contacts. Trust only the numbers that appear on your card, your account statement, or your bank’s official website.
Validate the official mobile banking application. If there really is a suspension, you’ll see it reflected on your bank’s app or online portal. Otherwise, it’s a sign that the message you received isn’t trustworthy.
If a message, call or email sounds suspicious or insists that you act with great urgency – stop! Remain calm and validate the information before reacting. And while scammers play on urgency and fear, you can beat them by staying calm and alert.
During Cybersecurity Month, remember: Your security starts with you. Stay informed, always check before you act, and protect your information as the most valuable asset you have.
