The Final Chapter of Rescate Costero Will Be Written in Isabela

In 2023, Rescate Costero set out with an ambitious goal: to plant 25,000 native trees over three years to strengthen Puerto Rico’s coastlines and help mitigate coastal erosion. Since then, hundreds of volunteers, students, municipalities, and partner organizations have joined forces to turn that vision into reality.

Today, after reaching communities across the Island and planting thousands of trees adapted to Puerto Rico’s coastal environment, we are closer than ever to achieving that historic milestone. Yet there is still one important step remaining: Completing the final planting event and turning this collective goal into a lasting achievement for Puerto Rico.

A Goal Built One Community at a Time

Over the past three years, Rescate Costero has demonstrated that coastal restoration can deliver meaningful results when different sectors work together toward a common purpose.

Each planting event has helped strengthen vulnerable coastal ecosystems, promote environmental education, and increase the coastal resilience of communities facing the impacts of coastal erosion and extreme weather events.

But beyond the thousands of trees planted, the program has built something just as important: a community of people committed to protecting Puerto Rico’s natural resources.

Why Participate in a Planting Event?

Coastal erosion continues to be one of Puerto Rico’s most pressing environmental challenges. Beach loss, storm surge impacts, and the degradation of natural ecosystems affect both biodiversity and the communities that live along the coast.

Planting native species helps reinforce the natural barriers that protect these areas. Trees and shrubs such as sea grape, cocoplum, button mangrove, gumbo limbo, and other coastal species help stabilize soils, protect dunes, and strengthen ecosystems that serve as a first line of defense against the sea.

Participating in a planting event is a simple and meaningful way to support coastal restoration efforts and contribute to protecting Puerto Rico’s coastlines.

An Opportunity to Be Part of History

On October 17, Rescate Costero will hold its final planting event at Pozo Teodoro in Isabela, marking the culmination of an environmental initiative that has mobilized communities across Puerto Rico over the past three years.

The event is free and open to the public. Participants will receive the necessary planting tools, as well as expert guidance to ensure a safe, educational, and meaningful experience.

In addition, participating students may earn green contact hours, making this an opportunity to contribute to the environment while fulfilling academic requirements.

This event is ideal for anyone interested in environmental volunteerism, natural resource conservation, and protecting Puerto Rico’s coastlines. Space is limited, so early registration is encouraged.

The End of an Initiative. The Beginning of a Legacy.

The final tree planted through Rescate Costero represents far more than a goal achieved. It represents thousands of volunteer hours, collaboration across sectors, the commitment of communities throughout Puerto Rico, and the belief that nature-based solutions can create lasting impact.

When that final tree is planted, a three-year initiative will come to a close. However, its impact will continue to grow for decades, strengthening ecosystems, supporting biodiversity, and increasing Puerto Rico’s coastal resilience.

And you can be part of that story.
